Although he’s inevitably become the main accredited name behind Volcano Choir’s sophomore LP, Justin Vernon wrote barely any of the music on Repave.Rather, most of it was helmed by his fellow.
Nevertheless, the announcement of another album from Volcano Choir, a collaboration with post-rock band Collections of Colonies of Bees, was a bit of a surprise. Their 2009 album Unmap was a solid collection of abstractions with the occasional killer song ( “Island, IS”, if you haven’t heard it, is still awesome), but it was a bit unstructured (and quite strange for my tastes).
On Repave, Volcano Choir have made a concerted effort to address those limitations. Instead of brittle sketches and a non-collaborative set of songs, the band function here as a fully-formed unit, feeding off each other and pushing in new directions. Convened as an experimental collaboration between Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and members from Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir has slowly become an inventive force of sublimely crafted melodies and transcendent guitar riffs. After releasing the well received yet unpredictable Unmap LP back in 2009, the Wisconsin six-piece have returned to deliver an effortless composition that.

Still, it would be wrong to classify Repave as anything other than a Volcano Choir album. Vernon’s longtime compatriots are largely to thank for that, especially guitarist Chris Rosenau and drummer Jon Mueller, who provide the album with a jittery nervous system and a muscular, volatile pulse, respectively. The sum of the group’s power can be found on the jaw-dropping “Byegone,” a.

Repave is a grown offspring of the self-titled Bon Iver album and Volcano Choir’s debut Unmap. Repave being a sophomore release from the collaboration, the album goes a long way to solidify the group as a solid band. The lyrics are pointing towards the connection between one person and another, and the shared existence and experience of a close group of people. The writing expresses the.

It took three years for Wisconsin natives Volcano Choir to release a follow-up to their impressive debut, Unmap. The time was well spent, since Repave proves to be an unsurprisingly beautiful study of the most relatable of human emotions. Incorporating images of regret, disillusion, solemnity, hope, and defiance, the songs piece together the complex experience of being stuck at an existential.
Although the six piece tries to avoid the focus on it you can’t really talk about VOLCANO CHOIR without mentioning their lead singer Justin Vernon especially. No wonder, since the band’s new album Repave marks the first musical output by the man who’s alter ego BON IVER went from a little folk phenomenon to something much bigger two years ago. The longplayer Bon Iver, Bon Iver received.
